25 Oct'2011, CNRIFFI

We went to Yashow Market 雅秀市场 this morning, to the CNRIFFI 中国食品发酵工业研究院 in the afternoon and to Silk Street 秀水街 at night. It was an enjoyable day, I'm glad to visit this research institute. **) Everybody seems to work hard and very diligent.

They are really into the liquor technology, you can smell the alcohol all around the 5th and 6th floor. They own microorganisms bank, million microorganisms have been collected for years and kept it in a very good way. As far as I can see, the working environment there is good. I wish some of my friends can work here later.

雅秀市场, Yashow Market is located near our hotel, while 秀水 or Silk Street is located near near Wangfujing, the line 1 metro subway. To go to Silk Street, we took a subway from 三元桥 Sanyuanqiao to 永安里 Yonganli for 2 RMB and shopped for 2.5 hours. Bargain is not my favorite, still. Why? Because I understand what the sellers are saying. I really appreciate if you don't curse me. Btw, these markets are specialized to accommodate foreign customers, it's my first time to see a whole building full with foreigners in China **) and most of the sellers speak English and even other countries language. I even heard some of them use French and Russian language chatting.

I bought Scrat from Ice Age there. Finally, he got the nut!

24 Oct'2011 Pineapple Juice, great lecturer

Great man, HU Aijun, PhD. was teaching our class today. He explained about juice processing technology, especially concentrated pineapple juice (CPJ). I bet he's a talented and great man in his field, he has done 23 projects (most of them are national projects); published more than 100 journals; written 7 books; and had more than 20 patents. Has a 7 years experience in food industry, now he is a lecturer in Tianjin Science and Technology University.

Highlights for today's class:
1. Ultrasonic usage in food preservation
2. Never forget to utilize your by-product when building food factory
3. Pineapples, Ananas comosus, is originated from South America **)
4. His CPJ project was done in Pontianak, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia. He and his team helped PT.Agro Industri Saribumi in machine & equipment installment. It becomes the biggest CPJ factory in Asia. I never knew about this before!**)

I felt exhausted after the class, Mr. Hu spoke so fast with lots of details. I need a full concentration to make sure I wouldn't be left behind.

time to take a rest...

**) indicates that this experience/knowledge is new for me

23 Oct'2011 Forbidden City

Though, we still had some fun!
At the end of the day, we went to Wangfujing.
Went to Wangfujing foreign bookstore and spent the time there. I decided to learn Spanish later!

22 Oct'11 Meat Processing

Wow! I'm glad that it's finish. 辛苦了贾老师!
We learned a lot today. It's kind of review for me, but I like it. I need that.

I enjoy the way she divided her lecture. Started from basic principle of meat processing (freezing, salting, curing, mincing, fermenting, smoking, stuffing/packing), machines used (both western and Chinese machines), western meat product, and at the last one she shared videos about traditional Chinese meat products. Everyone asked where can they eat Beijing Roast Duck after that.

If I have enough money later, I will consider to buy Chinese machines

btw, the food today was great! 好吃!

21 Oct'11 Cheese! and Welcoming party!

Have been 3 days in Beijing, all the blogs written doesn't show any class held yet, does it?

We had our first class today, Cheese Processing Technology, with Mrs. WANG Jianming 汪建明 from Tianjin University of Science and Technology. We studied a lot from morning 'till the afternoon, she also has a lot of interesting videos, make the lecture more interesting and clear. She explained all the process very detail, I like that!

Coagulation and whey separation...

And also, she is so generous, she will share all the food processing videos she has been collected for years. We will visit her lab to make a doufu and ice cream next week. I'm excited!

Do you know?
Only the 1st quality milk can be made into cheese.**)
The 2nd class milk can be made into yogurt.
The 3rd quality milk can be made into milk powder.
And the bad quality of milk can only be made into ice cream, lactose or/and whey powder.

In the afternoon she told us the main procedure to make ice cream and doufu. Thinking about buying a soya milk maker and bring it to Indonesia. Is soya milk maker different with juicer?

At night, we were invited to the welcoming party. We listen to Bae and Bach who sang Vietnam songs; Rithy and Sophak who sang Cambodian songs. We learned to dance Salsa which lead by Maricruz, and Iranian dance which lead by Masoud. We also saw a Chikung show by Mr. How. **)

Great day and exhausted also
晚安!

20 Oct'11 Opening Ceremony

Today was the opening ceremony for our workshop "Food Processing and Equipment Selection for Developing Countries". Woke up late, I didn't really have any breakfast, mostly because I was too nervous for the opening speech.

Yeah, the organizer pointed me out of nowhere to give an opening speech as a representative of participants. **) feichang jinzhang!! It was my first time to delivering speech as far as I remember, and it was in English, and most of the audiences are older than me. zhende tebie jinzhang!

19 Oct'11 in Beijing for Food Processing Workshop

From 19 October to 8 November, I'll be in Beijing for a workshop training. I think this is a brand new thing for me. I haven't really joined an international food processing workshop before, so I am going to write down all my exciting experiences here, included the food-related and non-food-related things.

**) = a sign to indicate that this experience is new for me.

I made it to Beijing again. It was my first time to travel to Beijing alone.
Was my first time also to sit on a Z train. **)

Z, stands for zhi da 直达, only stops on the last station. My Z18 goes directly from Changsha to Beijing West Station without any stop in the middle. It only takes 13 hours. I assume Z18 and Z17 are designed for businessman to travel between these two cities. I only saw 1 little girl on my cart. The rest are men and women in suites. It was a peaceful trip, the seat was comfortable enough (soft seat, 软座)and people seemed to be busy with their business. Some men made a business phone call, dealing with partners, some of them opened their laptop and read some articles, while I preferred to read China Daily.

Arrived in Beijing by 8 AM, delayed 1 hour from the schedule, I was picked up by Ella and brought to our hotel by taxi.
I've been to Beijing West Train Station for 4 times, and it was never easy to get a cab there. The line was incredibly long and the taxis are not enough. Today I was picked up by local Beijingers, thus she took me cross the road and took the taxi from the opposite side **), which actually also forbidden. But, it saved a lot of time. I'll remember this next time!

The trip from the west station to the hotel at Chaoyang district was the longest taxi ride for me in China. 果然首都堵车堵得很厉害啊!**)
Funny experience:
On the ride, the taxi suddenly turned to a hotel stopped RIGHT in front of the door the hotel. Ella, who picked me up, and the driver got off from the cab. I thought it was the hotel. As I opened the door they asked me to stay inside the cab because they just wanted to use the restroom. By less than 1 minute they both got back to the car and felt relieved. :-D

Last one, I found out that 15C in Beijing is still warmer than 15C in Changsha.

it's autumn..and we went picnic!

It's good to have a community. I'm happy for having them.
A place you laugh together, learn together..
to love and to be loved..
to encourage and be encouraged..

Picnic to Orange Island  at the end of the Golden Week was really freshened me up...
though still the "walking" part was tiring for Indonesian ;)
but to got out from the lab and its boredom really helped me!
Thanks to you all! It's a great time!
